Danbury, CONN. (March 31, 2020) – In an effort to support area hospitals battling COVID-19, the Union Savings Bank Foundation today announced it is awarding a $150,000 grant to the Nuvance Health Covid-19 Preparedness Fund. This grant will benefit Danbury Hospital and New Milford Hospital, which are operated by Nuvance Health.
“Though the emphasis of the Foundation has been on education, we have always felt that we must be able to respond to the immediate needs within our community,” said Cynthia C. Merkle, President and CEO, Union Savings Bank. “In light of the immense pressure being placed on our area hospitals to respond to COVID-19, the Foundation board felt it was imperative to move quickly to assist Danbury and New Milford hospitals as they continue their herculean efforts to keep all of us in good health.”
“The health of our community is at the core of our mission, and we have been working day and night to secure critical supplies so that our facilities are fully equipped with the material and technology crucial to keeping our community members safe during this pandemic,” said John M. Murphy, MD, President and CEO, Nuvance Health. “We’re very thankful to the USB Foundation for this very generous donation, as it comes at a time when we anticipate a greater strain on our system due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases.”
Dr. Murphy explained that Nuvance Health is responding to the pandemic today but needs to continue to build its reserves of supplies, equipment and additional staff. “The donation from the USB Foundation will go a long way to support our ongoing preparedness.”
“This donation is a reflection of all the people that make Union Savings a viable part of the community,” said Merkle. “We’re thankful to be in a strong financial position, which enables us to provide this level of support to Nuvance Health, and applaud and thank them for the critical work they are doing for our community.”
